Fiver Fest is a huge national celebration of Britain’s fantastic small businesses and shops, many run by families or individuals, but ALL contributing massively to the economy of the UK and the wellbeing of our towns. Towns and High Streets taking part put on special £5 offers for either one week, sometimes two weeks, to show the diversity and value of what they sell, and to say thank you to the communities that support them.
It comes from the (now famous) Totally Locally £5 message showing the huge impact of people spending just £5 per week in their local independent shops can have on our High Streets. This message is that:
IF EVERY ADULT IN LEIGHTON BUZZARD SPENT JUST £5 A WEEK IN OUR INDEPENDENT SHOPS & BUSINESSES, INSTEAD OF CHAINS, IT WOULD BE WORTH AN EXTRA £7.2 MILLION PER YEAR GOING INTO OUR LOCAL ECONOMY, WHICH MEANS MORE JOBS, BETTER FACILITIES AND A NICER PLACE FOR US ALL TO LIVE. MAKES YOU THINK, DOESN’T IT?!
The idea behind Fiver Fest is that the fiver works its way back into the local community. It is part of helping people to shop locally (whether in person or online) so that they don’t feel overwhelmed and don’t feel they have to boycott their supermarket or big shops.
Totally Locally is a grassroots idea that start in Yorkshire and has since grown into a multi-award-winning worldwide movement. It is now in Leighton Buzzard. It is about creating stronger, better independent High Streets. Find out more about Totally Locally. It ties in with the messages and work of Leighton Buzzard Town Council to support local businesses and services including the “Keeping it Local Leighton Buzzard” message but is totally independent of any other organisation. If you want to join the campaign locally going forward and support work behind the scenes please contact us by email at firstname.lastname@example.org
And why are we doing this? This quote sums up what the Totally Locally and Fiver Fest campaign is about. Its not going to change the world, its not perfect and its not going to solve all business problems – but it is a step and a part of making things better in a practical way and making us all feel at home (which is hopefully what we all can relate to and what we all want). Let’s make Leighton Buzzard feel like home to those new and old, young and not so young.
